Nasik, 13th February, 2011: Om Hospital and Research Center, Nasik, today announced the launch of a new product in its hip replacement portfolio called ‘Corail Pinnacle’. Coming as shot in the arm to patients suffering from osteoarthritis, Corail Pinnacle marks a new chapter in hip replacement at the hospital as it cuts down on the time taken for surgery and allows a patient to lead an almost normal life post surgery. The longevity of the product makes it ideally suited to even younger patients suffering from avascular necrosis in the hips.
Commenting on the launch of the technology, Dr. Tushar Deore, Joint Replacement Consultant & Surgeon, Om Hospital & Research Centre said, “In cases of total hip replacement, Corail and Pinnacle are used together to provide complete relief to the patient. Corail is an uncemented stem that replaces the top of the worn out femur, preserves cancellous bone and allows normal bone to grow onto the stem. Its 25-year life makes it an excellent option in younger patients who have good bone quality. Pinnacle’s comprehensive cup system is a proven high performance product with a 10-year life. Although it can be used in most patients, it is not recommended in a highly osteoporotic patient.”
Dr. Luca Marega, Senior Consultant, St. Anna Hospital Brescia, Italy adds, “In trauma related pain, avascular necrosis and even osteoarthritis, patients often have reservations about opting for hip replacement surgery. These reservations stem from elements such as the cost of surgery, the degree of restoration of movement post surgery and time for recovery. Corail Pinnacle puts to rest those reservations since it is cost effective, involves very little bone loss and a patient gets back to almost normal movements after a short convalescence.”
About Hip Replacement
When medication, physical therapy and other conservative methods of treatment no longer relieve pain, total hip replacement may be recommended by a surgeon.
Hip replacement is a surgical procedure in which the hip joint is replaced by a prosthetic implant. Hip replacement surgery can be performed as a total replacement or a hemi (half) replacement. Such joint replacement orthopaedic surgery is conducted to relieve a patient of pain or lack of mobility arising out of osteoarthritis, trauma related pain or avascular necrosis. It allows patients to perform many activities that may have been limited due to hip pain.
There are 2 main components used in total hip replacement:
- The acetabular shell replaces the hip socket;
- The femoral stem replaces the worn out top of the femur.
During surgery, the head of the femur (thigh bone) is removed and replaced with both a stem and socket, mimicking your existing anatomy.
Osteoarthritis (OA): Osteoarthritis or the degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis. OA is a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of the joints cartilage. The breakdown of the cartilage causes the bones to rub against each other, causing stiffness, pain and loss of movement of the joint. It is associated with aging and most typically begins in people age 50 years or older.
A young person who develops osteoarthritis typically has had an injury to the hip or may have an inherited form of the disease.
Trauma related Pain: This could be the result of damage to the joint from a previous surgery. It also results in joint damage, pain and loss of ability.
