Lucknow, 6th May, 2011: Lucknow has emerged as a major knee replacement centre of the state and approximately 1000 knee replacement surgeries are performed every year. This number is steadily increasing due to availability of skilled surgeons and new technology in the area of Knee Replacement Surgeries. This was stated at a medical practitioners meet organized by Arthritis Foundation of Lucknow (AFoL) where prominent orthopaedic surgeons from Mumbai and Lucknow sat and discussed the contemporary concepts used for Total Knee Replacement (TKR) and Partial Knee Replacement (PKR) surgeries.
Dr Sanjeev Jain, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Hiranandani Hospital, Mumbai, who operated a complex knee replacement surgery on 57 year old lady, said “Mrs Sushma(name changed) had an injury (fall) because of which her implants became loose and a surgery had to be performed. Thanks to timely intervention and availability of computer assisted surgery techniques and advanced implants like Metaphyseal Sleeves she was back on her feet and able to live a pain-free life like before. Her case can easily be replicated to thousands of patients with arthritis pain and other bone degenerative conditions.”
Knee Replacement Surgery has witnessed major up gradation in the last decade. Nowadays custom made instruments are used that reduce the duration of the surgery significantly. The instruments also help in a better pain management and in achieving accuracy of bone cuts while performing a TKR. Many patients are opting for this surgery as there is only a marginal increase in the cost of the surgery.
Interestingly, after a TKR or a Revision surgery a patient can lead an equally active life and perform functions such as cycling, sitting, squatting, walking and playing games such as golf. Due to these benefits, TKR has gained huge popularity throughout the nation.
Highlighting the need and benefits of revision surgery, Dr Sandeep Garg, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Vivekanand Poly Clinic, Lucknow said, “Revision Knee Replacement surgery is performed to repair a previous knee replacement that has developed problems, such problems may include dislocation, instability, and infection, among others. The availability of computer navigation system helps a surgeon to make accurate cuts and prevents unnecessary bone loss.”
Dr Sandeep Kapoor, Joint Replacement Surgeon, Vivekanand Poly Clinic, Lucknow said, “Indian women are more prone to bone injuries and joint problems. Since, the bone density is very low, the risk of bone injuries also increases due to the fact that they are often negligent about personal care and bone health. Total Knee Replacements and Revision surgeries in such cases often become critical.”
