  90% of Glaucoma cases in India remain undiagnosed - Elevating Glaucoma Awareness the Eye-Q Way
 
Chandigarh, 11th March, 2011: Eye-Q, the centre for excellence in eye care and the largest chain of super specialty hospitals in Northern India as a part of its vision is dedicated to the mission of raising awareness concerning World Glaucoma Day on March 12, 2011.

Caused due to the death of Optic Nerve cells, Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the World and third most common cause of blindness in India. Glaucoma presently accounts for 12.3% of the total eye diseases prevalent in India and is estimated to affect as many as 80 million people by 2020 across the globe.

In India, 11. 2 million people are affected by it and 1.1 million have turned blind due to the disease. This is in contrast to 40-60% rates of undiagnosed disease in more developed countries. The number of Glaucoma patients in India is expected to rise significantly to 16 million by 2020 due to an ageing population and lack of early detection symptoms of the disease.

In light of the staggering figures it is very critical that World Glacoma day is utilized as a correct platform in India to elevate awareness about this eye disease.
