Indian Farmer Industrial Alliance (IFIA)a Joint Venture of Consortium of Indian Farmers Associations (CIFA) views on FDI in retail:

  • CIFA-IFIA believes that retail will help in establishing backward - forward linkage. It will help farmers in establishing producer groups and supplying to retailers directly.
  • It will eliminate 4-5 middlemen at different levels.
  • Currently 30-40 % of all farm produce gets wasted due to an efficient link between the farm and the consumer – the aam admi
  • It will enable farmers to get inputs on best practices.
  • It will help farmers in getting extension services.
  • Producer Groups will be able to grade the product and supply directly to retailers.
  • Producer groups will be able to get assured price as they have to enter into agreement with the retailers for continuous supply.
  • We are of the view that large retail outlets will be established only in mega cities covering perhaps 10%-15% of the population.
  • We believe that the Kirana shops in the villages or small towns cannot be replaced by large scale retail stores.
  • CIFA is of the view that it will encourage farmers to become producer groups and have better bargaining power in future.
  • CIFA believes that competition amongst Indian and foreign retailers will increase competitiveness, better price and services to farmers.
  • FDI in retail is a follow up of liberalization programs.
  • Organised retail stores will source vegetables and fruits directly from farmers around the cities where the retail stores are. This will help the local farmer and help farmer in the rural area, prosper along with the urban population. This will help the local economy of the village also.
  • Crop Holiday and farmer suicides are directly related to failure of marketing which is glaring failure of Indian Agriculture Sector. FDI in retail will help in finding a solution.
  • Farmers are unhappy that the political parties and the city-based intellectuals are opposing agricultural reforms including FDI in Agriculture. However, farmers will strongly support the liberalization process in agriculture sector including FDI in retail.
  • Farmers will benefit in all sectors whenever farmer and industry are partners like dairy, sugarcane, tobacco, seed production.
  • ITC’s E-Choupal, Mango supply by farmers co-operative in Chittoor District to Coca Cola in Andhra Pradesh
